Marie Antoinette's travel bag fetches nearly £40,000 at Paris auction By Tatler.com

Married to the future King of France when she was just 15,Marie-Antoinette’s short life was full of lavish grandeur fit for a Queen but she was also subject to vicious gossip that ultimately led her to be be headed when she was 37 years old. Her style and life has filled books, museums and galleries for years and there’s always someone more than willing to get their hands on a piece of her history.

In an auction near the Palace of Versailles, where the last Queen of France once lived, many of Marie-Antoinette’s personal belongings weres old over the weekend. ‘Royalty at Versailles’ held by French auctioneers Osenat, saw many incredibly rare pieces that belonged to French royal family members exceed expert’s estimated prices.

Among these pieces was Marie-Antoinette’s travel bag. Made from wood and lined with leather the piece was expected to make between €8,000 and €10,000 but in fact went for €43,750 with a lot of interest in the room as well as online and on the telephone. The description of the piece read, ‘The interior has been refurbished, but an older lining remains, made of unbleached canvas, presenting in the lid an oval-shaped nailing that held a piece of skin that probably had to be marked with initials or coat of arms.'

Another notable lot was a large serviette that once belonged to the ill-fated Queen, with Royal Fleurs de Lys insignia, leaf crowns and a bouquet of roses that, although expected to make €2,000 - €3,000, actually went for €14,500.

A more bizarre relic of history that was sold during the rare auction was a lock of hair from Marie-Antoinette's husband Louis XVI that went€4,000.
