A World Record USD870,000 for Zelda Game Cartridge

Old-school video games have become very desirable collectibles over the last few years.

A sealed cartridge of The Legend of Zelda for the old Nintendo NES console has sold for a world record sum of USD870,000, auction house Heritage Auctions said in a statement recently.

The game that started it all, the original Legend of Zelda on the NES introduced all of the key elements that are still in the series to date. Characters like Link, Zelda, and Ganon all appear (though Ganon doesn’t have a name just yet), as do the iconic Triforce and the land of Hyrule. Even the structure is largely the same: it may be a 2D game played from an overhead perspective, but it lays the foundation for the entire series.

The cartridge, dated to 1987, is still in its original packaging and trumps the previous world record sale of a video game – USD660,000 for a 1986 Super Mario Bros cartridge sold in April – according to the auction house.

The game was the “masterpiece” in a sale of 443 lots,. However, the identity of the buyer was not revealed.

Blending adventure, action and exploration in a magical universe, Zelda is one of the most significant titles in the history of video games and one of Nintendo’s best-known series.
