Session 2 : 2.30pm - Straits Chinese Collection (Lot 162 - Lot 242)

For the very first time, the Summer Asian Art Auction will present the Chinese bilateral cultural relic journey across the sea to the south!

Originally a great Chinese cultural relic from China, it has been infused with a different kind of charm in Nanyang, creating extremely precious unique Straits Chinese cultural relics.  This auction, we are privileged to present an extraordinary cross-cultural Chinese art event, showcasing fine Chinese art and connecting the Straits Chinese cultural relics down south.

Malaysia, also popularly known as "Nanyang" is the main home base for the early Chinese migrants from China. During the 19th to early 20th century of Chinas social unrest, many Chinese nationals travelled across the ocean to Nanyang and set foot as their future home. Some of the internationally renown Straits Chinese of Malaya (the territory name of Malaysia before its independence) personalities are the plague fighter Dr.Wu Lian-De and the patriotic overseas Chinese entrepreneur Zhang Bi-Shi, regarded as the "father of Chinese red wine". Sun Yat-Sen, the founding father of China, also visited Malaya several times to promote his revolutionary ideas and built the important revolution society. Outside of China, Malaysia is also a land blessed and deeply preserved with the Chinese culture.

In addition to practising and nurturing their culture, the Straits Chinese migrants who made their fortunes in Malaya also owned unique Straits Chinese cultural relics. Straits Chinese art is probably the most precious piece of China's porcelain export. These exquisite pieces of the Straits Chinese porcelain were rare and sought-after among the Straits Chinese community.

Among the best Straits Chinese porcelains are Nyonyaware. Nyonyaware represents the unique Peranakan culture of Baba Nyonya during the Straits Settlement period (Little Nyonya, a Baba-Nyonya-culture-themed popular TV series was produced and broadcasted in China jointly by China iQiyi media and Singapore Media Group). Nyonyaware is known for its premium quality famille rose (fencai) porcelain ware, specially custom-made in Jingdezhen China, the worlds city of porcelain during Late Qing Dynasty.

As Malaysia's and South East Asia's leading auction house for Straits Chinese antiques, MNP Auctioneers will be presenting Chinese Art collections from as early as Tang and Jin Dynasties through to the Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing dynasties and also the Republic of China. Also available are some of the finest pieces of Jun Kiln, Ming and Qing Dynasties with strong provenance. With so much to offer, interested collectors can expect a quality auction event of Chinese art.

In 2020, the auction house organised three online auctions for its buyers from across the region. In their first Asian art auction for 2021, MNP is striving a breakthrough to synergize the predominant Chinese Art with the greatest Straits Chinese export, famille rose porcelain

Cultural relics and artworks are not only pleasing to the eye and the soul, but also have historical, cultural and academic values. At the same time, it embodies the value orientation of our ancestor's cultural philosophy.

The history, culture, craftsmanship, scarcity and non-renewability of cultural relics and artworks determine the commodity characteristics of preservation and appreciation. Collecting exquisite cultural relics is not out of reach!
